The image below is a snapshot of the drawing tools for the white-board. Hold the mouse pointer on a button to get a quick description (you can also do this in the chat room). Click on a button to scroll the page down to its description. To scroll back to the top, just click on any icon on the left-most column.

Cut Cuts selected object.

Copy Copies selected object to the clip-board (equivalent to CTRL - C).

Paste Pastes the object in the clip-board onto the white-board (CTRL - V)..

Make a Reference Links a chat message to a selected area or to an object on the whiteboard. See Refering to an Object on the Whiteboard for more details.

Select: Selects a single object or a set of objects on the whiteboard.

To select a single object left click on graphic, and then left click on the object.

To select multiple objects press and hold the left click button, and select an area on the board by dragging the pointer. All objects included in the region will be selected. Alternatively you can hold the SHIFT button and click on the objects one by one. All the object that you clicked on will be selected.

Draw a Line Draws a straight line. After clicking on this icon, click and drag the left mouse button to set a starting point. Release the left mouse button when you reach the desired end point. A straight line will be drawn between the starting and ending points.

Freehand Drawing Does freehand drawing. After clicking on this icon move the pointer to where you would like to draw. Then click and hold the left mouse button. Move the mouse around to generate your freehand drawing as you are holding the left mouse button. The drawing will be posted when you release the left mouse button.

Draw a Rectangle/Square
Draws a rectangular shape. To draw a rectnagle click the button once, position your mouse on the whiteboard, left click and drag the rectangle to the desired size. When you release the button your rectangle will be posted on the board.

Useful Tip: To draw a perfect square, hold the control (CTRL) key as you are dragging the mouse to set the size of your rectangle. This will force your drawing to a perfect square

Draw an Ellipse/Circle
Draws a circular shape. It works like drawing a rectangle as described above.

Create a Text-box You can use text boxes for posting text on the white-board. To post a text box click on the graphic button, move the pointer to where you want your text box to be posted, and do a left click. A text box with fixed size will appear with a blinking cursor inside, which will allow you to type text directly. By default, the text color is set to black and the background color is set to white. You can easily resize the text box by clicking and dragging one of the corners.
Insert an Image You can add an image (picture) to the white-board by choosing an existing image file. When you click on the graphic button, you will see a dialogue box that you can use to browse through your image files in your computer. When you select an image file the dialogue box will be closed. Finally, left click on the place you would like your image to appear on the white-board.

Link Objects Draws an arrow between two object on the white-board. This can be useful for marking two related objects on the white-board. Here is an example that will link object A to object B with an arrow:

     1. Click on the arrow button

     2. Move the pointer on object A

     3. Click and hold the left mouse button (the pointer should look like a small sqare now).

     4. Drag the mouse onto object B, and release the button. Now you should see an arrow from object A to B

Create Mind Map Starts a Mind Map by posting its central node. Mind Maps are diagrams that you can use to organize given information and your ideas in a concise way in terms nodes connected to each other. 3
Add a Sub-node Adds a sub-node to the selected Mind Map or node. To add a sub-node to the center of the mind map, select the center and click on . Similarly you can add a new node connected to a sub-node by selecting it and pressing this button.
   

Here is an example mind map which summarizes the info given in a problem statement.

Select Line Style Sets the line style for your drawing brush. To change the brush style click on the arrow button and select a style from the drop-down menu. For example, when you are drawing a geometric figure like a cube, you may want to use different brush styles such as solid or dashed lines to improve your drawing.

Select Line Thickness
Sets the thickness of the drawing brush.  To change the thickness of the brush left click on the arrow button and select a thickness value from the drop-down menu.

Tip for using brush type and color: You can change the thickness, style, and color of an already drawn object on the board. For instance to increase the thickness of an existing line segment, select that line segment by clicking on it, and then choose a thicker option as described above. Select Brush Color Sets the brush color. When you click on the arrow button you will see a set of default colors to choose from. (If you wish to use other colors, then you can click on "Choose Color" button to choose from a spectrum.)

Select Fill-in Color Sets the fill color for objects on the whiteboard. For instance, if you click on a textbox and change the fill color to yellow, the textbox's background will be displayed in yellow.

Zoom
Zooms in and out on the whiteboard. To set a zoom level left click on the arrow button and select a value from the drop-down menu.
Lock Object Locks the size and the position of an object. To lock an object select it, and then press the anchor button. To unlock press the anchor button again (make sure that the locked object is selected first).

Tip: This can be useful when you have multiple drawings layered on top of each other. For instance when you are adding numbers to a sudoku puzzle, if someone moves the grid you will have to re-position the numbers you added earlier. Anchoring the grid will be a good idea in this case.

Send Mail
Opens an email window that you can use to contact the mentors (e.g. for getting feedback) or your team members (e.g. to report a change you made, or to schedule a new group meeting time).
Tip: All the rooms in VMT chat are persistent. In other words, when you come back to the room at another time you will be able to see the contents from earlier sessions. So you can come back to see whether you got feedback from Math Forum mentors, or schedule another future session about the same problem etc.
Help Opens up the help page in a pop up window.
