David Wiesner, a Philadelphia-based children's author and illustrator, was the recipient of this years Drexel University/Free Library of Philadelphia Childrens Literature Citation Award. Dean David E. Fenske made the presentation with Free Library of Philadelphia Director, Siobhan Reardon, at the Carolyn W. Field Award Luncheon held on Monday, October 19, 2009, during the Pennsylvania Library Associations Annual Conference in Harrisburg, PA.
David Wiesner is a three-time Caldecott Medal winner (2007, Flotsam; 2002, The Three Pigs; 1992, Tuesday) as well as a two-time Caldecott Honor winner (2000, Sector 7; 1989, Free Fall). Awarded by the ALA division, the Association for Library Service to Children, the Caldecott Medal is an award of highest distinction given to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children.
Established in 1963, the Drexel University/Free Library of Philadelphia Children's Literature Citation is awarded to authors, illustrators, publishers and educators who have made outstanding contributions to the field of literature for children. The recipient must hail from Philadelphia, or have contributed significantly to literature for children in the Philadelphia area.
