Healthcare Informatics at Drexel

Drexel University's Institute for Healthcare Informatics offers a three-course Certificate in Healthcare Informatics designed to increase students' knowledge of health information technology, and management of the complex social and organizational issues surrounding this major change in healthcare. Graduates of the program will gain knowledge and skills useful in taking on additional healthcare IT-related responsibilities or embarking upon new careers as managers or developers of healthcare IT systems. Increasingly, consumer advocates and citizens are choosing to expand their understanding of this fast-growing field and its impact on their personal health.

All courses are offered online using enhanced BlackBoard technology. The Certificate in Healthcare Informatics consists of nine credits, and is organized in 10-week quarters. The courses may be taken completely online. Students work individually and in groups, interacting with the instructor and each other through a variety of online activities, Students participating in the program come from a national pool of adults working in hospitals, clinics, information organizations, pharmaceutical companies and technology.

The introductory course presents an overview of all aspects of healthcare informatics, including medical, nursing and bioinformatics. It provides an introduction to the applications of information systems in a variety of healthcare environments, including, research and clinical settings. Through extensive reading and critical discussion of relevant professional research literature, students gain a broad understanding of the field and learn how to keep abreast of new developments.

The second course explores the challenges inherent in implementing health information technology in complex organizations, and gives students opportunities to critique and develop effective solutions to these issues. The third course addresses the planning and evaluation of health informatics applications. Under the guidance of the instructor, students work intensively on a problem of their choice and develop a proposal for its solution.

The Institute for Healthcare Informatics is a joint venture of The iSchool at Drexel, Drexel's School of Public Health, The College of Nursing and Health Professions and The School of Medicine.
