The Management Digital Information Library Information Specialist (LIS) track provides a strong introduction to the theoretical and practical issues surrounding the management of large collections of digital resources. These resources may appear in a wide variety of  forms such as database records, text files, images, sound, Audiovisual files, programs and many more. The information you will need to deal with can be anything from complex non-linear oral histories to virtual reality tours of historical buildings. Collections of these resources may adopt many names such as Digital Libraries, Digital Repositories or Digital Collections. Unlike proprietary databases the items in such collections must be retrieved without the user requiring prior knowledge of the structure of the collection.

LIS Professionals are likely to be directly affected by the requirement to manage modern and diverse digital information resources and provide clients with advice on information retrieval. You may find yourself directly involved in;

  • Designing Digital Libraries or Repositories
  • Defining cataloging schemes for complex media types
  • Defining content management policies and rules
  • Search engines and information retrieval
  • Understanding and gathering differing user information requirements
  • Defining access, security and privacy policies
  • Defining user interfaces to access Digital resources
  • Creating web portals to information resources
  • Defining and implementing digital preservation policies and migration strategies
