Course:INFO612 - Knowledge Base Systems
On Campus Offering:None
Online Offering:Fall
Faculty:Weber, Rosina
Extended Course Description:

Catalog Course Description:
Introduces the concepts, principles, and techniques of knowledge base systems, with a focus on implementation of a working expert system.  Presents the expert system development life cycle with a focus on analysis and conceptual modeling techniques.

Pre-requisites and Co-requisites:
INFO 503  Introduction to Information Systems Analysis

Curriculum Role:
This is an elective course.

Course Rationale:
Although not part of any current concentration, from a technical perspective, this course complements introductory concepts taught in INFO 627 Concepts in Artificial Intelligence and INFO 634 Data Mining. From an applications perspective, this course extends the student competence in knowledge management as it illustrates methodologies that can implement pragmatic solutions.

Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, a student will be able to:
• Describe various knowledge based methodologies
• Distinguish a variety of knowledge engineering techniques
• Examine and describe a proposed knowledge based system
• Design a development life cycle for a knowledge based system
• Propose a knowledge based system
• Explain the use of knowledge base system (KBS) shells
• Evaluate knowledge base systems

Course Content:
Principal topics and the approximate number of weeks devoted to each are:
• Introduction (1)
• Knowledge engineering (1)
• Expert systems (2)
• Case-based reasoning (2)
• Ontologies (1)
• Knowledge representation (1)
• KBS development life cycle (1)
• Advanced knowledge base system issues (1)

Presentation:
Note: Presentation method may vary somewhat from section to section.
The principal method of presentation is by lecture, in-class presentation, and class discussion.

Assessment:
Note: Assessment method may vary somewhat from section to section.
