Presents details of specific server platforms used to provide services to information systems applications.  Prepares students to apply server technologies to information systems problems. 

Pre-requisites and Co-requisites:

CS 133  Computer Programming C or CS 260  Data Structures or
SE 103  Foundations of Software Engineering III
INFO 320  Server Technology I

Curriculum Role:

This course is:
• Required for the Server and Network Technology sequence in the BSIT program.
• A possible Information Systems elective in the BSIS program.
• A possible computing elective for the BSSE program.
 
Course Rationale:
This course provides students with hands-on experience with installation and configuration of current server applications and technologies.
 
 Course Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course:
• The learner will be able to describe the fundamentals of software-based server technology
• The learner will be able to match software server technologies to a particular information systems application problem or system
• The learner will be able to set up and utilize the Apache Web Server
• The learner will be able to set up and utilize the Apache Tomcat Server
• The learner will be able to describe the fundamentals of XML
• The learner will be able to describe the SOAP framework

• Introduction and overview to software server-based technologies (1)
• Review of types of server-based applications and their application to information systems (1)
• Introduction to Web servers (0.33)
• Introduction to the Apache Web Server (1)
• Setting up, configuring, and applying the Apache Internet Web Server to information systems (2)
• Introduction to servlets (1)
• Setting up and using the Tomcat Java Server (0.66)
• Using servlets (1)
• Introduction to XML (1)
• Introduction to SOAP (1)

Presentation:

Note: Presentation method may vary somewhat from section to section.
Course materials will be presented to the student through lectures, in class exercises, and self-study.  Labs will reinforce concepts presented in class and give the students practical hands-on experience with technologies covered in this course.  Students will be assigned several mini-projects so that concepts can be reinforced.
