Exciting advances in information technology have changed everyone's lives over the past 50 years. To benefit from these advances, we have to be able to develop highly dependable software systems, at a predictable cost. But just how can we do this? Cost and schedules overrun on commercial software projects commonly average at least 100 percent, and can even quadruple costs. As a result, about a quarter of large projects are abandoned, never to be completed. Undependable systems can mean failure, sometimes resulting in injury and death.

This is where software engineering comes in - the application of processes, methods, and tools to building and maintaining quality computer software, at a predictable cost, on a predictable schedule. Software creation isn't easy, but our goal at Drexel is to make the process as efficient and reliable as possible.

Since 1997, Drexel has offered a popular and successful master's degree in software engineering through the College of Engineering and the College of Information Science and Technology. These same Colleges now offer the Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering (BSSE) at the undergraduate level.
