Below are options available to students seeking to complement their master's education in Library and Information Science with a specialty area that highlights their talents or interests. Five optional concentrations are available to all Master of Science in Library and Information Science (MS) students. Please the concentrations section of our site to learn more about each option.
MS(LIS) Concentrations Library and Information Services This is a generalist concentration that prepares students to work in a variety of settings, including academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries. Digital Libraries This concentration prepares students to work with digital resources in libraries and other organizations. Competitive Intelligence and Knowledge Management This concentration focuses on information needs and knowledge management in special libraries, corporations and other organizational settings. Youth Services This focuses on the information needs of children and teens and the design and provision of information services to meet those needs. School Library Media This concentration is for those interested in working in K-12 school library programs in both public and private schools. It is designed to prepare graduates to become eligible for certification as a school librarian by the Pennsylvania Department of Education. Additional Special Options Archives Option Students interested in archival management have the option of taking elective courses at Drexel. The college launched Archives I in fall 2008, with new courses beginning in winter 2009 (Archives II), spring 2009 (Access Techniques and Systems for Archives), and fall 2010 (Appraisal and Selection of Records). These courses address the unique challenges facing archivists today. Students are also able to earn graduate transfer credits by taking one or more courses offered through Temple University's history department. Both programs prepare students desiring to qualify for the Certified Archivists (CA) examination.
