Employment Outlook for Librarians

Job opportunities for librarians are expected to increase by 4% between 2006 and 2016, but high turnover will provide many opportunities.

The aging demographics of the current workforce means that many employment opportunities will open up for younger workers as baby boomers retire.  2 in 3 current librarians are age 45 or older and will become soon eligible for retirement.

The research, organizational, and computer expertise of librarians can make a valuable contribution in non-traditional settings like private corporations, nonprofit organizations, and consulting firms.  This is predicted to be the fastest sector of growth in the profession.
